Centennial kicks off festivities at 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27

Miss Oregon 2013 will serve as Centennial High School's grand marshal for homecoming after U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer was summoned to Congress to deal with sequestration, the federal budget cuts the nation faces.

Blumenauer, a 1966 Centennial graduate, has rescheduled a visit with high school students for Tuesday, Oct. 15. He will hold an assembly and break-out session with school leaders, honor students and other interested groups.

Additionally, Blumenauer and his wife have notified Centennial they will contribute $5,000 to help with the Blumenauer Scholarship over the next few years, said Ehren Schneider, activities coordinator.

With the donation parceled out, that means the scholarship will total $2,000 each year for a graduating senior — $1,000 each year to match $1,000 raised by Centennial's education foundation.

An educational assistant in the district suggested Miss Oregon, Allison Cook, for an alternative grand marshal of the Sept. 27 homecoming.

A junior at the Oregon Institute of Technology, Cook represented her state in the Miss America Pageant earlier this month in Atlantic City, N.Y.

This isn't Centennial's first brush with the Miss America Pageant. Katie Harman, a 1999 Centennial graduate, was named Miss America in 2002.

Homecoming festivities will begin with an open house from 4-5:30 p.m. Friday, followed by The Eagle Bite Tailgate in the school's parking lot.

High school clubs, athletic teams and the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes will sell food through half-time.

A homecoming parade featuring a variety of organizations from the high school and — for the first time — representatives from Centennial Middle School and several of the districts elementary schools will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The parade will begin at Lynch Wood Elementary School, 3615 S.E. 174th Ave., and end at the high school stadium.

The game between the Centennial High School Eagles and Gresham High School Gophers will begin at 7 p.m.
