Care packages bring cheer to American military personnel

East County scouts send care packages to members of the Army, Navy stationed in Afghanistan

Last week, Girl Scouts from East County troops created care packages of cookies, handmade cards and pictures to send to American military personnel.

“It means a lot to participate in this,” said Kim, 12, a seventh-grader at Clear Creek Middle School. “It’s really fun to see the pictures they send back of how happy they are receiving the packages.”

Kim was joined by Girl Scouts who ranged in age from 5 to 16 and represented the Daisy, Brownie, Junior, Cadette and Senior levels.

Among the Girl Scouts were Kim's sisters, Rebecca, 11, and Megan, 5.

Each year during cookie sales, Girl Scouts can accept “Gift of Caring donations” — cookies donated toward causes or donations used to purchase the cookies for causes.

Troops 40029, 45547 and 45688 of East Multnomah County and service unit 16 opted to support Molly’s Adopt A Sailor, which sends monthly packages to American military personnel.

Molly’s Adopt A Sailor is sending more than 110 boxes to 86 Army and Navy personnel stationed in Afghanistan. Girl Scouts boxed 23 of the packages Monday, March 17, at Rockwood United Methodist Church.

Kim and Rebecca have volunteered for the program for four years, putting in more than 30 volunteer hours and enjoyed sharing the volunteer with fellow Girl Scouts.

“It’s really special to see how happy this makes them,” Rebecca, a sixth-grader at Clear Creek Middle School, said of the sailors.
