Portland Lutheran helps sister school through art

Students and staff members at Portland Lutheran School hope to raise more than $165 through an art project to help buy lunches for students at their sister school in Kenya.

The project began with Portland Lutheran’s art teacher, Paola Iturralde, who wanted to find a way for her students to express themselves before a global audience and do some good in the process.

She learned how students at St. Stephen School Iranda are often hungry, with little or no sustenance during the school day.

St. Stephen was rebuilt in 2013 after its previous building collapsed, operating with a staff of five teachers, one cook and one manager.

Teachers were donating students’ tuition for student lunches, but with an increased enrollment — 78 students — the school’s needs expanded. Students pay the equivalent tuition of $3.50 per month; five orphans do not pay for tuition.

Iturralde worked with a nonprofit organization in Malawi to forge an art exchange between third-graders at both schools. Portland Lutheran’s project incorporates coins that will be donated to meals for Kenyan students.
