Gresham children celebrated the start of summer during the official kickoff for the Summer Kids in the Park (SKIP) program — a fun event for the whole family that will continue every week until August.
Friday afternoon, June 30, at Main City Park, 219 S. Main Ave., more than 65 kids and their families enjoyed free lunch and activities while hanging out with police officers and firefighters. There were Popsicles, bubbles, sticker badges and plastic firefighter hats, along with a chance to try spraying water from Fire Engine 71's hose.
"Every year, we have grown in attendance at each of the three parks," said Joe Walsh, senior manager for neighborhood prosperity and youth engagement. "It's a nice mix of repeat users and one-timers who were enjoying the park and happened by all this."
SKIP has been organized by the city for the past four years at Main City Park, Vance Park and Red Sunset Park. With support from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area, kids can enjoy the event Monday through Friday through Aug. 18.
