SCREENSHOT - The new Gresham-Barlow website.Gresham-Barlow School District started the new year with a new web page designed to make information easier to find.

The redesign was also aimed at making it easier to use on smartphones and other mobile devices. The district calendars are also more integrated.

Corbett School District also is in the process of redesigning its website, which hasn't been updated since 2011.

The new Corbett website will be optimized to work on mobile devices and comply with ADA requirements.

MHCC planetarium opens new show

The first show at The Mt. Hood Community College Planetarium, 26000 S.E. Stark St., will detail all the exciting planetary events of 2018. The 45-minute, family-friendly program is scheduled for 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 9, and Friday, Jan. 12.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for children 17 years old and younger.

The planetarium just installed comfy new chairs.

West Orient teacher achieves certification

Tina Bethmann, West Orient Middle School eighth-grade teacher, was scheduled to be recognized at Gresham-Barlow's Thursday, Jan. 4, school board meeting for renewing her national board certification.

There have been 324 national board certified teachers in Oregon and Gresham-Barlow currently has 15.

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification is a rigorous process only a small percentage of teachers undertake.

Earning national certification is a long and grueling process of compiling portfolios of work, taking classes and tests. It generally requires hundreds of hours of unpaid work by the teacher.

MHCC recruiting host families for Japanese students

Mt. Hood Community College is seeking host families for about a dozen exchange students ages 18 to 24 from Ryukoku University through the winter. The students need host families from about Feb. 10 through the first week of March.

An individual bedroom is preferred for each student, along with easy access to public transportation or a carpool. A stipend will be provided to help defray the costs.
