EMAR builds brighter future for disabled veteran
The pride and independence that comes with homeownership can easily be taken for granted.
But for many disabled veterans, the costs of purchasing and maintaining a home designed and built for their specific needs is little more than a dream.
To help disabled veterans make the move toward self-sufficiency and pride of ownership, the East Metro Association of REALTORS (EMAR) is inviting the community to join them at their first Mission Possible Gala, to be held Friday, March 23, at Cedarville Lodge in Gresham. The gala is a fundraiser for Homes for Our Troops, a national nonprofit organization that builds and donates specially adapted custom homes for severely injured post-9/11 veterans. Funds raised at the event will be directed to a home currently being planned for Army Staff Sgt. Frank Wasson III and his family in West Salem. Homes for Our Troops have also gifted homes to veterans in Parkdale and Sandy.
Stephanie Johnsen is a real estate broker with ERA Freeman & Associates in Gresham and EMAR's Community Outreach Committee Chairwoman for the gala. For her, aligning with Homes for Our Troops is more than simply a vehicle for providing a home to a veteran.
"It's really about giving this severely injured veteran the same freedoms and independence that he nearly risked it all for," Johnsen said. "And as I have said since day one of planning for this event, he suited up to serve us. Now, it's our turn to suit up to serve him."
To propel the gala, and Staff Sgt. Wasson's home, off the ground, EMAR and the planning committee are seeking community support with sponsorships, silent and oral auction donations and as table hosts.
Sponsorship levels are $1,000 (Silver), $2,000 (Gold) and $3,000 (Platinum), and include dinner for a table of eight guests, advertising in the event program (contingent upon sponsorship level), honorable mentions in pre- and post-digital marketing as well as acknowledgment at the event.
Individuals can host a table for eight for $500, which also includes acknowledgment at the gala and dinner. Single tickets are $75 each and are available now.
