COURTESY PHOTO - Charity WilliamsMt. Hood Community College student and honor society president Charity Williams has been selected to be a Newman Civic Fellow.

The Newman Civic Fellowship is a one-year fellowship focused on personal, professional and civic growth offered through the Campus Compact, a national nonprofit association of more than 1,000 colleges committed to civic education.

The fellowship also offers opportunities for special scholarships and post graduate work.

Williams is working toward an Associate of Applied Science in Child Development and Early Education at MHCC and expects to graduate in June. She plans to enroll in the Child, Youth, and Family Studies program at Portland State University.

Corbett Schools seeks opinions on Springdale playground plan

A team of staff and parents is working to create a natural playground at the Springdale School in Springdale near Corbett. Jessica Lieuallen, a teacher at CAPS and staff leader on the project, has created a survey to get information from interested community members regarding their support.

Families can make felted Easter eggs

Using wet-felting techniques, children and their grown-ups can create beautiful felted eggs to use for spring decorations in a free craft workshop from 3-5 p.m. at the Fairview-Columbia Library, 1520 N.E. Village St. The class is great for beginners.

Celebrate women astronomers at library

During Women's History Month, honor the achievements of 10 contemporary astronomers who have changed the way we look at our planet and the universe from 2-3:15 p.m. Saturday, March 17, in a free workshop at the Gresham Library, 385 N.W. Miller Ave. Vera Rubin, Nancy Roman, Margaret Geller and Jill Tarter are just some of the remarkable scientists whose accomplishments have opened up the cosmos. This program will look at astronomers whose groundbreaking work strives to advance the world toward a better future.

Move it with Zumba for all

Zumba combines dance and fitness moves with Latin and international music, and the whole family can enjoy a free class from 2-3 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at the Rockwood Library, 17917 S.E. Stark St. Instructor Lydia Hernandez Solis will lead everyone at their own pace, no experience required.

Corbett schedules scholarship fundraiser

Corbett Education Foundation will raise money for scholarships with a "Family Fun Bingo Night" on Saturday, April 7. Dinner starts at 5 p.m. and bingo at 6 p.m. The event is $10 for people aged 14 and older and $5 for those 13 years old and younger. There will be pizza, bingo and prizes. Cash, debit and credit cards accepted. The event will be in the Corbett School multipurpose building, 35800 E. Historic Columbia River Highway.
