Troutdale resident Thomas Joseph Kemp died Saturday, June 29, in a motor vehicle accident. He was 28.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at Corbett Community Christian Church, 34309 N.E. Mershon Road, Corbett.

Thomas was born Nov. 16, 1984, in Portland, to Cecelia and Joseph Kemp. He attended Troutdale Elementary School, Reynolds Middle School, Walt Morey Middle School and Reynolds High School.

A self-employed hunting and fishing guide and a landscaper, Thomas was a member of Gresham Chapter Order of DeMolay.

Steven Miles Coburn

Jan. 6, 1947-June 27, 2013

Longtime Sandy resident Steven Miles Coburn died at his home Thursday, June 27. He was 66.

A funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 5, at Sandy Funeral Home.

Steven was born Jan. 6, 1947, in Portland to Keith and Evelyn (Lawson) Coburn. He was raised and educated in Rockwood, graduating from Centennial High School.

Steve worked various jobs until retiring. He enjoyed woodcutting and spending time in Sandy coffee shops. He also enjoyed family gatherings and the wonderful meals served at them.

Survivors include his mother; his brother, Charlie Coburn; sisters, Julie Dunford and Kathleen Beal; and his nieces and nephews.

Sandy Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

John C. Hites

Feb. 13, 1927 - June 20, 2013

Longtime East County resident John C. Hites died Thursday, June 20, at his home.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at Willamette National Cemetery.

John was a retired home building contractor in Gresham and carpenter working throughout the Portland metro area.

He is survived by his wife, Elena; daughters, Cathy and Sonia; and son, Ray.

Irene R. Asakawa

May 28, 1928 - June 25, 2013

Longtime Gresham resident Irene R. Asakawa died Tuesday, June 25 in Gresham. She was 85.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 8, at the First Baptist Church in Gresham.

Irene was born May 28, 1928, in Birmingham, Ala., to Morgan and Beatrice (Strickland) Ray. She was raised and educated in Alabama, where she married John Miller. He died in 1948.

Irene married Stan Surface in 1951. They moved to Gresham in 1955, but divorced in the late 1960s. She then married Ben T. “Benny” Asakawa in the early 1970s.

Irene worked as a waitress for the M & M Restaurant for 20 years. She also worked at Polar King for 25 years before retiring in the late 1990s.

Irene was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997 and two sons, Ken Miller in 1997 and Rocky Surface in 1999.

Survivors include her children, Brenda Myers of Salem, Sandra Surface of Gresham, John Miller of Gresham and Candyce Carter of Portland; sister, Katy Tondu of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
