Broadway Musical Revue opens Thursday, March 13

by: OUTLOOK PHOTO: JIM CLARK - Choir and theater students are performing a medley of musical pieces for their Broadway Musical Revue, opening Thursday, March 13, at Sam Barlow High School.

This March, a musical buffet awaits audiences at Sam Barlow High with the school’s Broadway Musical Revue.

Students will perform a variety of Broadway musical selections at 7:30 p.m. March 13, 14 and 15 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, at the high school, 5105 S.E. 302nd Ave., Gresham.

“We’re taking the audience through a range of emotions,” said co-director Debra Stevens. “They’ll laugh, they’ll cry, they’ll be entertained.”

Stevens is co-directing with choir director Solveig Nyberg.

The cast features 25 students in choir, theater and a combination of both departments, including seniors Clark Anderson, choir president, and Madi Stevens, vice president.

The duo began their musical theater careers together in their fifth-grade production of “Aladdin” and co-starred in Damascus Middle School’s “Beauty and the Beast” as the lead characters.

“I love that this is a compilation of songs and there’s a different feeling to each song,” Anderson said. His favorite pieces are “Seasons of Love” from “Rent,” which the seniors sing, and “Seize the Day” from “Newsies.”

Stevens, an aspiring musical theater performer who plans to pursue the art as her college major, enjoys the straight show of singing.

“I love how it moves from fun to serious,” she said.

The musical pieces range from solos and duos to small and large groups.

Some selections the choir sang at regionals this month, and two of the choir’s selections, “Little Red Hat” and “I’ll Be Here,” will be performed at state in April.

Tickets are $6 for students and $8 for adults. For more information, call the school at 503-674-5600.
