Barlow sweeps past Gresham to take inside track to second place in the MHC

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Barlows Brynna Stauffer lets out a yell after the Bruins put the ball down on the other side Tuesday night. Barlow’s volleyball team won a pair of hard-fought sets to open the night before running away to hide in the third, scoring a sweep over rival Gresham in front of a packed house Thursday night.

After leading through most of the second set, Barlow found itself in trouble when Kuwi Ahina blasted back-to-back kills to put the Gophers up late. Gresham went on to force a pair of set points, but that is when Barlow middle blocker Maddie Pernich caught fire.

Gresham couldn’t find the water buckets.

Pernich pounded out four straight points to give Barlow the set and command of the match.

She took a big swing through the middle to knot the score at 24-24, then hammered a ball straight down on the other side when Gresham floated a pass over the net. Pernich finished the scoring spurt by finding a hole in the back corner on the Bruins’ first set point.
