Barlow sweeps basketball doubleheader from Gophers
The Barlow boys basketball team pulled away in the second quarter Friday night to cruise to a 71-47 win over Gresham.
Barlow took a double-digit lead when Hunter Roeder chased down a long rebound, stayed ahead of a pair of defenders and sidestepped a final Gophers in front of the basket to complete the fastbreak.
The lead quickly expanded when point guard Wesley Becker whipped a pair of perfect passes inside to Caden Nelson and Parker Joncus for a pair of easy buckets.
Barlow took a 45-26 lead into the locker room when Nelson beat the clock with a 12-foot jumper. The Bruins sealed the victory by scoring the first eight points of the second half.
The Barlow girls secured a 37-30 win over Gresham, holding the Gophers to a single point in the first quarter and carrying a comfortable margin the rest of the way.
The Bruins took an eight-point lead late in the third quarter when Emily Sunderland wiggled through a crowd and popped open near the sideline to sink an 18-footer on an inbounds play.
Gresham got it down to four points with about five minutes to play, but Barlow put the game out of reach when rookie Renick Meyer split a pair of defenders to get to the front of the rim for a 35-27 lead with 2:01 left.
