Portland Lutheran claims finale to take series vs. Loggers

by: THE OUTLOOK: DAVID BALL - Portland Lutherans Christopher Lehr sprints down the first-base line during Fridays doubleheader with Vernonia. After a case of the hiccups to begin Friday’s doubleheader, Portland Lutheran found its stride to salvage a baseball split against league foe Vernonia.

The Blue Jays gave up nine runs in the first two innings on its way to an 11-4 loss in Game 1 Friday, but bounced back to lead most of the way in a 7-6 victory in the nightcap.

“We put up some runs late in that first game and made some good things happen, and that momentum carried over in the next game,” Blue Jays coach Greg Lowrey said.

Portland moved ahead to stay in the second game on a two-run single by Bryce Lowrey in the second inning and expanded the gap to 7-3 into the late innings.

The Blue Jays looked ready to seal the victory with two quick outs in the seventh.

But Vernonia wasn’t done yet.

The Loggers got an RBI-single from Jared Whitton to pull to within a single run, and put him in motion on the base paths when Jake Butcher connected on a sharp hit to the left side. But Tony Renzema fielded the bouncer cleanly and sent a dart across the infield to beat the runner by half a step to end the game.
