FOREST GROVE — Gresham’s Advanced Metals baseball team didn’t waste much time taking command in Sunday’s championship game of the OIBA Futures tournament, putting up a three-run spot in the second inning on its way to an 8-1 win over Beaverton.

Kyle Wells and Tyler Wood put the Gophers in front with back-to-back run-producing singles in the second inning.

“Getting ahead early is one of the most important things in baseball,” Wells said. “We showed them what they were up against and were able to keep the intensity up in our dugout.”

That was plenty of support for starting pitcher Austen Carpenter, who went the distance, finishing with six strikeouts and retiring the last nine batters he faced.

Beaverton’s final chance came in the fifth inning when Wyatt Christopherson sent a lead-off single into left field.

But he wouldn’t leave first base.

The Gophers converted three quick outs highlighted by Wood making a diving catch on a foul tip behind the plate.
