MILWAUKIE — The Eastside Rough Riders had their opening-round opponent on the ropes early before falling 13-6 to the John Day Wildfire at the 10U state softball tournament last weekend at North Clackamas Park.

The Rough Riders put up three runs in the first inning powered by three consecutive hits. Peyton Trickel got it started with a single, followed by Brittney Henderson, who sailed a ball over the center fielder's head. Both found their way home when Kamdyn Elkinton slipped a single through the middle of the infield.

Elkinton found her way across home plate on a fielder's choice by Kayla Meyer to stretch the score to 3-0 — a lead the Rough Riders would hold into the third inning.

The Wildfire zipped into the lead with a five-run spurt in the third, highlighted by Drewsey Williams with a triple that cleared the bases.

The John Day squad would score in each of the final three innings and watched its lead grow to 11-3 by the fifth.

The Corvallis Lady Knights went 5-0 to win the tournament, finishing with a 12-1 win over the Rip City Bandits in the title game.

The Rough Riders finish their summer season July 15 at the Fireball Classic in Sherwood.
