Raiders run into double trouble in Sandy
Sandy spring break tourney
SANDY — The Reynolds High softball team thought it had done enough after posting four runs in its final at-bats, but Sandy rushed back in its half of the inning with a scoring spree of its own to collect a 12-11 win in the opener of its spring break tournament Monday.
The teams were deadlocked 7-7 heading into the fifth inning, which would be the last hurrah for both sides due to tournament time constraints.
Reynolds made the most of their final time at the plate with Meghan Convery fouling off three pitches before drawing a lead-off walk. Two more walks brought rookie Adia Messenger to the plate, and she delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to bring Convery across for the go-ahead run.
The Raiders would tack on three more to take an 11-7 lead and were just three outs away from securing the victory on a cold and drizzly morning.
Sandy wouldn't register an out in its half of the inning, with Leslie Main, Brooklyn Adams and Samantha Brewster sending run-producing doubles to almost the same spot in left field to tie the game.
A wild pitch opened the door for Brewster to slide across the plate for the winning run.
