As part of its 2016 public awareness campaign, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA) has announced that October will mark the beginning of their #Chiropractic1st theme and hashtag. In the face of a nationwide opioid abuse epidemic, #Chiropractic1st advocates for a conservative approach to pain management where chiropractic services are the first line of defense against pain.
For those living with either acute or chronic pain, such as those injured in motor vehicle collisions, opioids are often turned to first by prescribing physicians. But the numbers indicate that opioids may be doing more harm than good.
According to the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress (F4CP), more than 259 million opioid painkiller prescriptions were written in 2012. The number of overdose deaths involving prescription opioids is four times higher than that same figure in 1999. Perhaps most shocking of all, overdose deaths related to opioid abuse have risen in every county of every state since 1999.
The alarming overuse and misuse of opioids has caught the eye of the Center for Disease Control (CDC); conservative care options such as chiropractic care are now preferred over opioids for treating chronic pain. Chiropractic care effectively treats acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries, like those suffered in automobile collisions, while potentially avoiding the risks of prescription opioids.
At Hillcrest Chiropractic, we utilize a variety of treatment types, including safe and gentle joint manipulation and mobilization, to treat musculoskeletal and nervous system injuries. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Thomas today and get on the path toward optimal health.

September is Healthy Aging month a great time to consider ways to reinvent yourself.
According to Carolyn Worthington, editor-in-chief of Healthy Aging Magazine, its never too late to find a new career, sport, passion or hobby. Here are a few ideas to get you going:
Be positive in your conversations and your actions every day. When you catch yourself complaining, check yourself right there and change the conversation to something positive.
Walk like a vibrant, healthy person. Come on. You can probably do it. Analyze your gait. Do you walk slowly because you have just become lazy or, perhaps, have a fear of falling? (Tip: Make a conscious effort to take big strides, walk with your heel first, and wear comfortable shoes.)
Lonely? Stop brooding and complaining about having no friends or family. Do something about it now. Right this minute. Pick up the phone, landline, or cell and make a call to do one or more of the following: Volunteer your time, Take a class, invite someone to meet for lunch, brunch, dinner, or coffee.
Get outdoors! Start walking not only for your health but to see the neighbors. Have a dog? Youll be amazed how the dog can be a conversation starter. (Tip: If you dont have time for a dog, go to your local animal shelter and volunteer.)
Make this month the time to set up your annual physical and other health screenings. Go to the appointments and then, hopefully, you can stop worrying about ailments for a while.

For those on tight budgets, skipping routine car maintenance services may be tempting, but it will cost you plenty down the road.
If you don't maintain your car, a vehicle that might have been driven for 200,000 miles will likely last only 100,000 miles.
Then there are the costly repairs for turning a blind eye to maintenance: bad brakes, failed emissions tests and maybe even a failed engine.
Regular oil changes help keep your engine clean and lubricated, says Deanna Sclar, author of "Auto Repair for Dummies."
"Oil cuts down on the friction that can literally wear away the parts of the engine," she says. "One of the most important maintenance-related things you can do is change your oil frequently."
The recommended two oil changes per year cost about $60, while the cost of engine replacement can easily exceed $5,000.
An annual brake inspection allows us to spot wear before it gets dangerous and costly. Replacing brake pad and shoes costs as little as $99 per axle, while replacing rotors or drums can add several hundred dollars for NO reason!
Timing belt replacement at the manufacturers suggested interval can save big bucks. If the timing belt fails, the engine can stall resulting in a big towing bill. Replacing a timing belt costs about $450, while repairing the engine following a timing-belt failure could run about $5,000.
All told, regular maintenance of your car will cost a fraction of one major repair, a small price to pay to avoid costly repairs, vehicle life span and safety concerns.

Do you consider yourself an avid hunter? So does Tony Kriss. Kriss, the owner of Advanced Firearms Training in Gresham, OR, has been working in the firearms business since 1979. With a wealth of expertise at his disposal, Tony has a few tips to help you have your best hunting season ever.
Whether you are trying new ammunition, or you have purchased a new rifle and/or scope, you will want to sight-in your rifle for more predictable shot placement during the season. Make sure to use the SAME ammo for sighting-in that you will use while hunting. Its a good idea to use the same ammo brand and lot# for added consistency.
Additionally, you should sight-in for distances that match the area you will be hunting. Normal range for the Coast is 100 yards, whereas Central and Eastern Oregon have ranges of several hundred yards.
Depending on the conditions and your shooting distances, your sighted-in firearm may be the wrong caliber for a given hunt, however. For blacktail deer, .30-30 caliber rifles work well in dense brush settings, along with .444 and .44 Magnum. In contrast, more open hunting areas make the .30-06 and .308 Winchester excellent calibers for hunting blacktail deer.
For more friendly hunting advice and a wide selection of firearms, ammunition, and much, much more, visit Advanced Firearms Training in Gresham today!

How old are your homes windows? If you answered more than 15 years old, its time to consider upgrading to newer, more energy-efficient windows.
Windows have multiple functions that they perform for your home. First, beautiful windows will add to your propertys aesthetic look and can even boost your propertys resale value. Secondly, windows allow light into your home, brightening rooms and creating a more open and welcoming environment.
However, these same windows are also perfect conduits for hot air to travel through, whether its heated air escaping your home in the winter or the outside heat flowing into your home in the summer. Many older windows do not have protective tinting or are single-paned, and therefore inefficient at regulating your homes temperature.
Upgrading your home to newer, more energy-efficient windows carries a number of benefits. According to the Efficient Windows Collaborative, replacing the old windows of a 2,600 square foot, 2 story house with energy-efficient windows will save you at least 15% annually on your heating and cooling costs. Depending upon the condition of the old windows, these savings can be even higher, especially if air leakage is reduced by the new windows.
New windows will also add value to your home. For even average-quality vinyl windows, the National Association of Realtors 2015 Remodeling Impact Report states that roughly 80% of project costs can be recouped in added home value.
If youve decided that your windows definitely need replacing, McCord Construction would love to work with you; call us today!

Feed wellDuring the summer fish grow and consume more food than any other time of year. Be sure you are feeding a summer blend feed with a higher protein content to accommodate your fishs faster metabolism and ensure proper nutrition.
Be prepared for temperature changeA pond thermometer is a pond keepers best friend. Water temperature varies greatly depending on environmental factors like surrounding trees, elevation, and air temperature. New in stock this season are small digital thermometers that a very easy to read and only cost $10.
Transition feedAnywhere from late September to early October water temperatures will drop to 64 degrees, and thats when you transition to a spring and fall blend fish feed to prevent bloating and indigestion from excess protein.
Hibernation readyIt takes until around Thanksgiving for water temperatures to drop down to 50 degrees. When the water is consistently below 50, its time to stop feeding and let your fish hibernate for the winter. Add pond salt at a rate of 2.5 pounds per 100 gallons to achieve a salt reading of 3 parts per million. This keeps your fish free of parasites when theyre most susceptible.
NettingFalling leaves in autumn can cause many problems for pond owners. The best way to prevent a dirty pond and a clogged pump is to put netting over the pond before the leaves start falling. We sell pond netting in a large assortment of sizes here at Creative Visions.

If youve received one of Nancys Florals beautiful rose arrangements, there are a number of steps you can take to help your roses last. Roses should last a minimum of 5-7 days; follow these tips, however, and it is not uncommon for rose arrangements to last 2 weeks or more!
Keep your roses in an environment that has a temperature range of 72°-74° Fahrenheit.
Sunlight and air from vents and ceiling fans will dehydrate your arrangement, so keep your roses away from exposed areas.
Roses are very thirsty flowers, therefore rehydration is a must. Keep the water level in the vase at its highest point, refilling with lukewarm water often. Re-cut the stems and change the water (and floral food) every five to seven daysbacteria in the water can clog stems and shorten the life of your flowers. All of our rose arrangements are shipped with floral food already in the water.
If you do have any roses that prematurely wilt, they can usually be revived! Premature wilting usually indicates that air is trapped in the stem and the preservative solution cannot flow properly up the stem. Look for a cut or scrape in the bark above the water level. Re-cut the stem above the injured section under water and then submerge the entire rose in a shallow pan of warm water (about 100 degrees Fahrenheit), keeping the stem and head straight; the rose will usually revive within an hour.

You may think that all HVAC technicians are created equal, but thats just not the case. Working with NATE-certified technicians provides numerous advantages to working with technicians not certified by NATE. But just what is NATE, and why do I want a NATE-certified technician? Read below to find out:
What Does NATE Stand For?
NATE stands for North American Technician Excellence, a not-for-profit organization that trains on the latest heating, cooling and air conditioning technologies. Its the only nationwide program accepted by the entire HVAC industry, including contractors AND manufacturers.
Technicians who are NATE members must take periodic classes and tests on their knowledge of HVAC topics to keep on top of developments in the industry. NATE certification proves that technicians are experts in their chosen field. This program ensures that qualified technicians have a core set of competencies and can be trusted by those who hire them.
Why NATE Certification Is Important
An important part of NATE membership is regular training to update HVAC skills as technology is constantly changing. NATE-certified technicians can efficiently and properly install, repair, service and replace many different types of HVAC equipment. Properly detecting and fixing problems is essential because of the nature of these mechanical systems; if equipment is not serviced or installed properly, systems may not operate properly, resulting in higher energy consumption and more expensive bills.
Thanks to the extra training and updated skills that NATE technicians have, they have the ability to understand and handle both newer and older HVAC equipment models, providing consumers with peace of mind, regardless of the type or brand of equipment.
NATE certification is not only voluntary, it is also rigorous. Although other third-party certification programs are present in the HVAC industry, most have extremely high pass rates. NATE has the lowest pass rate of any industry certification program. This means that if you choose a NATE-certified company like Honke Heating and Air Conditioning, you are assured of having the best possible HVAC technicians complete your job. NATE certification was developed in conjunction with the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), which developed testing procedures to ensure high professional standards.

Honke Heating and Air Conditioning is NATE-certified to properly and effectively take care of all of your HVAC needs. Our licensed and professional HVAC techs are here for you!

Protecting your intellectual property, such as your business name, your inventions, or your trade secrets, is crucial to the success of your business. This intellectual property may be as valuable as the business itself and often times may be your business most valuable asset. If your business hasnt protected its intellectual property, here are 5 ways it can do so:
Patents protect products or processes that are unique, useful, and non-obvious. Under the protection of a patent, you can stop third parties from making, using, or selling your invention for a period of years.
Copyrights protect an original work of authorship, such as literature, music, or computer software. Filing for a copyright is voluntary, but doing so will make it easier to seek court enforcement of your copyright.
Having a unique, identifiable name for your product gives your business an advantage over its competitors. A trademark protects the name of your product by preventing other businesses from selling a product under the same name.
When you create a new organization, you reveal your valuable product ideas, marketing plans, and other intellectual property to employees, suppliers, and other business relationships. Non-Disclosure Agreements control the disclosure and use of your business intellectual property, ensuring that your trade secrets are maintained.
If you still have steps to take to ensure your intellectual property is protected, be sure to contact The Law Offices of Ken Mitchell-Phillips today.

Tired of shaving, tweezing, and waxing to remove unwanted hair? Then laser hair removal, the most prevalent and widespread laser treatment today, is worth considering. Laser hair removal is effective, it is safe, and at Bridge City Medical Aesthetics, it is affordable.
Virtually anywhere on the body can be treated, so long as the hair is darker than the skin. We use two gold-standard platforms to optimally treat all hair types with the exception of grey, white, and true red hair, which the laser cannot see during the procedure. We keep pricing simple by offering 4 packages sold in sets of 6 treatments: Small (lip, chin, sideburns, cheeks, happy trail, fingers, toes, neck front, neck back, areola), Medium (basic bikini, lower arms, upper arms, face, buttocks, underarms), Large (lower legs, upper legs, upper back, full face and neck, full arms, extended bikini or Brazilian), and Extra Large (full legs, torso front, torso).
Treatment sessions go relatively quickly. The sensation of laser hair removal is often described as a soft rubber band snap; thicker, coarser hair creates a more intense sensation, with many patients claiming that each treatment is easier than the last because there is approximately 15-20% less hair after each session. Topical anesthesia is typically unnecessary, but we do have it available for ultra-sensitive individuals.
If you are ready to take your first steps towards smooth, hair-free skin, schedule your complimentary consultation with Bridge City Medical Aesthetics today!

One of the big recent developments in the travel and tourism industry is the rise of the solo traveler. In the past, travel was centered on couples and families. Particularly on cruises, singles were often subject to a single supplement fee, which meant paying for double occupancy rooms as a single. Over the last several years, however, solo travelers have grown substantially, and the industry is doing its part to cater to this new demographic.
Cruise companies Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines have added studio cabins free of single supplement fees to several of their cruise ships. Holland America Line has launched what they call their SinglePartners Program, which matches solo travelers together to share a stateroom on one of their cruise ships. Best of all, SinglePartners travelers are guaranteed the lower rate of a double occupancy room even if a match cant be found.
Travel companies such as Abercrombie & Kent and Go Way Travel have similarly begun designing excursions specifically for solo travelers. These tours are often done in small groups of 10-20 people, and are a great way for travelers to experience a new destination without feeling lost in a crowd.
And at C.P. Trips, we are reviving our Classy Lady Travels (& Couples Too) program in 2017. Whether local, regional, or around the world, our program is focused on creating world-class trips for singles to experience in a group of like-minded travelers.
