Kyle Allen, a Hillsboro community activist, has announced his candidacy for the Ward 2 Hillsboro City Council seat that will be open in this year’s election cycle. The position on the ballot in 2014 is currently held by Aron Carleson, who serves as council president. Carleson first joined the city council in 2006, and due to term limits cannot seek a third term.

Allen works as a field manager for Working America, a nonprofit that does community outreach on behalf of the AFL-CIO.

In addition to his work in support of labor unions, Allen is active in several community organizations. He is president of the Chelsea Gardens Homeowners’ Association; a member of the city of Hillsboro’s budget committee; an alternate delegate for the State Central Committee of the Washington County Democrats; a volunteer reader for SMART (Start Making a Reader Today); works to collect clothing for homeless youth through HomePlate; and takes on other volunteer activities through his church.

Allen and his wife, Lisa, have two young children who will attend schools in the Hillsboro School District, and in a statement announcing his candidacy, Allen wrote that he is “passionate about a safe, livable community for his family and all the families of Hillsboro.”
