Hillsboro Chamber asks community for recomendations for citizen of the year, and other honors.

Know someone worth recognizing? The Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its 2018 Hillsboro Awards Gala later this year.

Each year, the Chamber awards Hillsboro businesses and residents for their ongoing service to the community.

Awards are given in several categories, including the Distinguished Citizen, the Chamber's top honor.

The annual awards are meant to highlight outstanding Hillsboro residents, businesses and nonprofits that make a difference in their community. The Chamber's annual Distinguished Citizen award is the highest honor the Chamber bestows, presented to members of the community who has provided outstanding service to the Hillsboro area over the years.

The Hillsboro Distinguished Citizen Award is given to an individual who has provided "outstanding service to the community," according to the Chamber.

Last year, Hillsboro City Councilor Fred Nachtigal was named the Chamber's Distinguished Citizen. His wife, retired Washington County Circuit Court judge Gayle Nachtigal, received the same honor two years earlier.

The Chamber's Robert R. Herb Leadership Award is awarded to a Hillsboro-area resident who has made an impact through community service.

Awards will also be presented to outstanding youth, volunteers and public safety professionals, as well as awards for the business and organization of the year and the Chamber's Agriculture Achievement Award, which honors local farmers and vintners for successful operations.

This year, the Chamber will add a new category, bringing back the Young Professional of the Year award. The award recognizes people between the ages of 21 and 41 who have achieved a successful career in the Hillsboro area, or made innovative contributions to a Hillsboro-area business.

Nominations for each category are being accepted through March 16. Applications can be downloaded on the gala's website. A nomination committee will review all submissions and select this year's recipients.

The winners will be announced at the annual Awards Gala, scheduled for May. In addition to the awards ceremony, the annual gala features a cocktail reception and gourmet dinner.
