The puppies were allegedly stolen by an 18-year-old Cornelius man, then abandoned by the railroad tracks.

COURTESY OF THE WASHINGTON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE - This puppy was one of two reported stolen Wednesday who was found and returned to the owners Thursday evening. Two American bully puppies reported stolen Wednesday, Jan. 16, were located and returned to their owners the following evening, according to the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

One puppy was found walking in the 1300 block of South Dogwood Street in Cornelius, the Sheriff's Office said. The second was located in the 3800 block of Pacific Avenue in Forest Grove.

The alleged theft was widely covered in news media, including by the Hillsboro Tribune. The Sheriff's Office said the people who found the puppies reported seeing the news coverage and knew to contact law enforcement.

The suspect in the puppies' theft is Sheiknoor Abdi, 18, of Cornelius.

Abdi allegedly admitted to investigators that he took the puppies after they escaped from the yard of a residence in the 2000 block of North Fremont Street, despite knowing they probably belonged to someone else, and then abandoned them by the railroad tracks nearby when he realized he wouldn't be able to keep them.

Abdi faces two charges of first-degree theft.
