Artsy quilt trail slowly headed toward county

Organizers of the Washington County Quilt Barn Trail are inching toward seeing their dreams come to life. Quilt enthusiasts were hoping to start hanging artistic painted quilt blocks on local barns by late August, but it looks like they’ll have to wait a little longer.

There will likely be two more public hearings before the Washington County Board of Commissioners Aug. 19 and Aug. 26.

The ordinance change that will make the quilt barn trail possible is expected to be adopted Aug. 26, and the changes would be effective starting Sept. 25.

Eight-foot-by-eight-foot quilt blocks painted by Westside Quilters Guild members will be mounted on local barns visible from the road, preferably along already established bike or wine trails, according to Julie Ellis of the guild. The colorful blocks are intended to generate additional tourism and celebrate local history. The blocks will be designed after quilts that traveled on the Oregon Trail enroute to Washington County.

The most recent revisions to the ordinance stated that the quilt blocks could be hung only on non-residential buildings.
