Pecsok, Falcons soar in Eugene

EUGENE – Liberty’s boys and girls teams both got off to impressive starts in the Class 5A track and field meet Friday at Hayward Field.

Eli Pecsok scored a bit of a surprise win in the girls high jump, clearing 5 feet, 4 inches. The senior had not cleared a height higher than 5-2 this season before last week’s Northwest Oregon Conference district meet, but she timed her peak in the event perfectly and picked up her first state title. Today she topped Hermiston’s Mckenzie Byrd on misses.

Pecsok, who will compete for the U.S. Naval Academy next year in the heptathlon, will have a busy Saturday competing in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles, triple jump and shot put.

Plenty of other Falcons also scored successes. Rachel Khaw improved two spots in the girls 3,000 over her 2013 finish with a fourth place. Her time of 10 minutes, 23.46 was a personal best to reset her own school record. In the boys 3,000, Michael Francy earned sixth place in 9:01.28.

In the field, Jon Horn earned his first state shot put medal with a throw of 48-1¾ for fifth. His best effort came on his fifth attempt.

In the track preliminaries, Sarah Martinez (400, 300 hurdles) and Josh Cole (400) sailed through to the finals in automatic qualifying spots, while Nick Bonat squeaked into the 110 hurdles final as the eighth and last qualifier (15.78).

After the first day, Liberty’s girls sat in third place in the overall standings with 15 points, while the boys were tied for 10th with seven.

Horn is Liberty’s first competitor on Saturday, where he looks to pick up another medal in the boys javelin, which starts at 11 a.m.. The girls 4x100 relay team will compete in the Falcons’ first track final of the day. The first 5A girls heat goes off at 12:38 p.m.
