Scappoose wrestlers perform well in tournament

Indians dead even in match scoring with 3-3-1 record
by: John Brewington UNDEFEATED—Scappoose’s Chris Wagner made it through seven matches the Northwest Duals last week without a loss. The Indians were 3-3-1 in dual matches at the tournament.

The Scappoose Indians had a pretty decent showing the Northwest Duals hosted by Westview High over the Christmas break.

Scappoose didn't make the championship bracket on the second day, going 1-2 in three matches of their pool at Westview. They came back the second day and went 2-1-1 overall. The Tribe beat The Dalles on the first day, then added wins over Woodburn and Rainier on the second. They tied Tualatin at 36-all in their last match of the tournament.

'I was really happy with our group,' coach Jim Jones said. 'They're very young and they go pretty hard. They're improving pretty rapidly.'

Jones noted that the competition is mostly 5A and 6A classification teams, with the exception of 4A Scappoose and 3A Rainier.

'We competed well and we competed hard. I was really happy with the match (against Tualatin) at the end of two rough days,' he added.

Jones moved the line-up around quite a bit during the tournament, trying to get everyone some mat time. 'We're so young I want everybody to get the opportunity to wrestle. We not interested so much in winning but in getting better and improving as a group,' Jones noted.

He said he was really pleased with how some of his young wrestlers competed such as Michael Lohman, Hunter Hoyt and Taylor Waldron. 'Outside of the obvious wrestlers like Chris Wagner, Travis Hill, and Luke Mills, all those kids competed hard and battled well on the mat.'

Top efforts on the first day of the tournament included 3-0 records from Taylor Walden, Chris Wagner, and Luke Mills. Rickey Aguilera and Michael Lohman were both 2-0. Travis Hills was 2-1.

Wagner and Mills would go through the tournament with seven wins each and nary a loss. Travis Hill and Garrett Couch were both 3-1 the second day of the tournament.
