Music key to heart-pounding workouts

by: VERN UYETAKE - StarCycle co-founder Erin Moone leads a class through their session. Starcycle classes focus on high cadence, low resistance exercise.Fitness professionals Erin Moone and Dionne Del Carlo have combined their love of fitness, fashion and music to open StarCycle, an indoor cycling studio located at 459 Second St. in downtown Lake Oswego. The women use music and choreography to create what they term an “addictive cardio experience.”

“When I moved to Portland from New York City over eight years ago, I craved an indoor cycling experience which matched those I found in New York and Los Angeles,” said Moone. “After years of looking, I decided to open my own studio.”

She has been a fitness instructor since 1995 and has taught yoga and spinning in Los Angeles and New York.

“StarCycle allows me to combine my love of dance and music to a cardio routine that is unmatched,” said Del Carlo. “Each class we teach will help our students discover their own rhythm and fitness potential.”

Del Carlo is a dancer and teaches barre classes. She has experience in brand marketing and earned an MBA from University of San Francisco.

The women have transformed the former Grand Papery location into a fitness studio with a child care area, retail space and guest services center at the front of the space.

The women, who have young children themselves, wanted to offer on-site child care so parents could enjoy classes knowing their children were engaged with experienced child care providers.

The women have developed a line of workout clothing, which they sell in the store, and participants can purchase cycling shoes there as well.

Classes are taught in a dark room to a highly curated playlist of songs bringing together artists such as Jay-Z, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen and Rihanna. The women describe the classes as “high cadence, low resistance, emphasizing the creation of sleek, lean muscles without adding bulk and focusing on heart rather than heart rate.”

More than 20 classes are offered and are spread out over seven days a week. A single class costs $18, and packages of three, 10, 20 and unlimited classes are available. The Star Chaser package, which allows a person to attend an unlimited number of classes the first month of their membership, is $99. Child care is $5 per class.
