The McLoughlin House unit of Fort Vancouver National Historic Site is open with a schedule of Victorian cultural demonstrations and other events. The ongoing hands-on demonstration series features a variety of Victorian needlework and handwork techniques so that visitors can experience this important aspect of the lives of women in the 1800s.

This year a speaker series will also be offered in the Barclay House on the third Saturday of each month.

The Third Saturday Speaker Series was developed as a way to highlight local history and tell stories that expand on the rich history of the area.

“We’re hoping this series will enrich what is already a vibrant local heritage community,” Heidi Pierson, National Park Service Museum specialist, said. “We want to provide a reason for people in the area to return to our site and enjoy learning something new.”

The speaker scheduled for the April 19 event is Elaine Dorset, an archaeologist at Fort Vancouver, who will speak about the history of the Fort Vancouver garden. The event begins at noon.

The McLoughlin House and the Barclay House are open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Free tours are offered every hour, beginning at 10:15 a.m. at the Barclay House, 719 Center St., Oregon City.

Attend the McLoughlin Memorial Association Founder’s Day from noon to 4 p.m. May 3. There will be an exhibit of art of Willamette Falls and music at the nearby McLoughlin House, 713 Center St., Oregon City, and ice cream floats on the Barclay House porch. The event is free.

A paper filigree demonstration will take place from noon to 4 p.m. May 10. Paper filigree, often referred to as quilling, is a craft that utilizes rolled paper to form three-dimensional designs and images. The event is free.

The Third Saturday Speaker Series planned for noon to 4 p.m. May 17 is Joe Galvan, who will speak about music in Oregon Country during the 1800s.
