It is hard to calculate how many songs were sung or notes played at Youth Music Project during its summer program and camps. Music and fun filled the air when Review/Tidings photographer Vern Uyetake visited YMP earlier this summer. And though summer is winding down, musicians can rest assured that the fall action will kick into high gear soon.

Two events this weekend will wrap up the summer activities:

Don’t miss the CD release party tomorrow for YMP musician Peter McCoid’s band, Andromeda. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. Admission is a suggested $5 donation at the door.

The final performance of the summer concert series will be presented by Phil Madeira Aug. 30. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.

A producer, composer, musician and singer, Madeira has made a life for himself in the arts. Whether writing songs for artists such as Alison Krauss and Garth Brooks, touring with Emmylou Harris or Buddy Miller, or playing any number of instruments on hundreds of records, Madeira is no stranger to creativity. He will be joined by Nashville session great Dennis Holt on drums and Portland’s Denny Bixby on bass.

Tickets are $20 each online at

Another highlight of the summer has been open mic events in the Meteor Lounge. Open mics will continue in the fall on Sept. 26, Oct. 24 and Nov. 14. Musicians, ages 13 through 18, are encouraged to attend the events, which run from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

Registration for fall classes in open now and auditions and placement interviews will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 9 and 10. The last day of registration for group lessons is Sept. 22 with classes beginning Oct. 6. Private lessons may start at any time.
