Dalzell.Lakeridge football players and supporters have collected more than one ton of boxes and cans of food for charity.

To gather 2,227 pounds of nonperishable food, team members on Saturday set up donation tables at the entrances to several area grocery stores — Zupan’s, Albertsons, Safeway and Lamb’s Nature’s Choice Market. Shoppers gave goods they’d bought at the store or gave money, which the team or a parent volunteer transformed into more cans. Lakeridge High’s principal, head football coach and other coaches also helped out.

The donated food will go to Hope Sparrow Services, a charitable outreach program of Hope Community Church in Lake Oswego. Pastor Peggy Dickerson told the team this is a record for the pantry and double what they usually have at the beginning of the school year.

It’s the first year the football team has done the food drive, but the plan is to make it an annual event, said Tom Krueger, chairman of the Pacer Success Committee.
