Free summer meals are available for children in need, and the school schedule for 2017-18 is taking shape.

Free summer meals are available for kids

There are more than 600 sites for Oregon kids, ages 1-18, to enjoy a free meal during the summer to enable parents in need to more easily feed their kids when school's not in session.

One of the nearest sites to Lake Oswego is at Alder Creek Middle School, 13801 S.E. Webster Road, Milwaukie. The site is open July 31 to Aug. 3, and hours are from 11:30 a.m.-noon Monday to Thursday. Northwest Family Services will partner with North Clackamas School District to provide soccer camp as well. Call 503-353-1900.

For kids who need a meal this month, the site at Aloha-Huber Park Elementary, 5000 S.W. 173rd Ave. in Beaverton, will be open for breakfast and lunch from 8-9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.-noon Monday to Friday from June 26-Aug. 18. Call 503-356-3969. Tualatin Hills Parks & Rec will offer crafts, sports and summer school.

For a list of other sites near you, visit summerfoodoregon.org or call 1-866-3-HUNGRY or 1-877-8-HAMBRE.

School schedule taking shape

The Lake Oswego School District's calendar is already taking shape for the 2017-18 school year.

The first day of school is currently set for Aug. 29. Winter break will give students some time off from Dec. 16-Jan. 1. Spring break is set for March 24-April 1, although it starts March 23 for junior high and high school students so that their teachers can do grade prep.

Weather make-up days in case of snow would be June 13-15. The School Board will approve the calendar later this summer, and commencement dates will be set later in the school year.
