Physician's book offers tips on how you can succeed

Just in time to support your New Year’s resolution to eat more healthfully and perhaps even lose some weight, Lake Oswego physician John Poothullil has released his book, “Eat Chew Live,” which focuses on four revolutionary ideas to prevent diabetes and help people lose weight and enjoy food.

“During the holidays, millions of Americans look forward to enjoying the time with friends and family over big meals, parties, social outings and drinks,” Poothullil says. “We all want to have a good time, and the last thing we want to think of is the result of overconsumption. But it’s time to wake up. America is becoming a nation of diabetics.

“To clarify from the start, I’m not referring to Type 1 diabetes, which is an hormonal disease. I am talking about Type 2 diabetes, which is a lifestyle condition that now affects one in four adults over 65 in the U.S., with one in three over the age of 20 prediabetic.”

Poothullil has studied diabetes for more than 20 years, and based on his experience as well as that of his patients, he believes Type 2 diabetes is linked to the overconsumption of grains. By 2050, he says, one-third of all Americans could be suffering from Type 2 diabetes.

“We all know that our bodies are like hybrid cars,” Poothullil said. “We can either burn glucose or fat. When people overeat grains and grain-based products, their fat cells fill with fatty acids as their body converts all that excess dietary glucose ingested through the carbohydrate-rich grains to fat. At some point, your fat cells are full and can no longer accept more fatty acids. In response, your muscles start to burn fatty acids and the glucose in your body is not burned and remains in your bloodstream, leading to high blood sugar and Type 2 diabetes.

“What this means is that Type 2 diabetes is not some mysterious disease or pandemic,” he says. “It is a lifestyle condition that can be prevented and even reversed.”

Poothullil says the “side effects” of reading his book are:

n You will understand what body metabolism leads to diabetes.

n You will learn how to eat to lower your blood sugar.

n You will be eating what you like and when you want.

n You will be enjoying food as never before without overeating.

n You will learn how to lose pounds and keep them off.

n You will reconnect with your body’s “authentic weight.”

n You will not need diabetes medication or insulin injections.

n You will feel confident that you will not be a victim of diabetes.

Poothullil suggests that if you want to avoid weight gain and the onset of Type 2 diabetes — or try to reverse your diabetes and get off your medications — reduce your consumption of grains and see what happens.

“Just cut down on your overconsumption of bread, pasta, pizza, donuts, muffins, cookies, pies and cakes and instead really taste, chew and enjoy your holiday meal in the company of your loved ones,” he says.

Poothullil is a diabetes expert and has practiced medicine for more than 30 years. He will present a presentation on the book at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center from 10-11 a.m. March 8 in the Alder Room.
