Wiewel, who started the tradition nine years ago when he was named president at Portland State University, was joined on the ride by faculty, students and staff from Lewis & Clark's College of Arts and Sciences, Law School and Graduate School of Education and Counseling. He is Lewis & Clark's 25th president and the first to have served as president at another college or university.

Wiewel led PSU during a difficult time, negotiating the economic downturn during the 2007-09 recession and guiding the university through a period of growth. During his tenure at PSU, the university renovated or constructed 10 buildings.

Lewis & Clark College is a private liberal arts school in Southwest Portland with about 2,000 students. The college's Law School and Graduate School of Education and Counseling together enroll 1,200 students in graduate professional programs.

The school, originally founded as Albany College in 1867, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.
