It is crystal clear our community loves its schools. It doesn’t matter if you are a parent with children in the schools or not. Lake Oswego takes great pride in investing in our children and schools.Patinkin

I am proud to be the new executive director of the Lake Oswego Schools Foundation. The schools were the No. 1 reason my husband and I moved to Lake Oswego. We believe in giving our children the best public education, and we found it right here. Through nearly three decades of hard work, our community has built a strong tradition that emphasizes a vision of successful students, excellent schools and a thriving community.

My vision for the foundation is one of growth; where our schools never talk about cuts. Rather, our schools are able to offer the tools and opportunities our children need to grow, to thrive and to become the leaders of tomorrow.

I understand this is a long-term vision, but it starts today with your support. We must increase both the funds raised during the annual campaign from parents, residents without children in the schools and businesses along with the increasing the number of donors to the foundation. Increased participation and donations will be critical to our foundation’s success.

Our foundation must also continue to grow its endowment fund with cash gifts and bequests. The endowment is critical in providing sustained support for our schools now and in the future. What better way to leave a legacy than to invest through a planned gift to the foundation’s endowment?

I believe it is through these efforts we’ll continue building on our foundation’s success. Investing in our teachers, children and schools we’ll continue to build on the solid legacy and unique quality of life we enjoy in Lake Oswego.

Our goal this year is to raise $2 million, increase family participation to 80 percent while also increasing business and community support.

Our foundation needs your support today. Last year, our foundation raised enough to fund 20 additional teachers. That is nearly one elementary school. Those additional teachers have provided our students with smaller class sizes at all grade levels and varied curriculum at the middle and high schools.

I ask you to join me and make an investment in our community and children’s future by making a donation to the foundation today. Your donations will help fund additional teaching positions at our schools. You can make your gift online at

Thank you for your support of the foundation, and I look forward a successful campaign.

Sara Patinkin, Lake Oswego, is the executive director of the Lake Oswego Schools Foundation.
