Join VIEWS, a senior support group

New group forming at LOACC


by: SUBMITTED ART - ViewsSeniors don’t have to face life’s challenges alone. Volunteers Involved for the Emotional Well-being of Seniors (VIEWS), a small, confidential group forming at the Lake Oswego Adult Community Center, provides a safe, supportive place to talk about life’s losses and successes and discover new ways of coping with issues of aging through sharing of common experiences. There are openings in the weekly senior support group led by trained volunteer peer counselors. The group meets every Thursday from 1 to 2 p.m. Registration is required. Friday, May 17

Blood pressure checks will be done from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. free of charge (donations accepted). No registration is required.

Lunch will be served by a group from Marge and Friends. The lunch includes tossed salad, pork with country gravy, brown rice, peas and corn, freshly baked rosemary rolls and peach coffeecake for dessert. Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4; $5 for those under 60. Lunch is served promptly at noon. Call 503-635-3758 for a reservation.

After lunch enjoy the Woodman Chronicles screening of “You Were Never Lovelier," a 1942 film starring Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth.

Take advantage of Lunch and Shop. Come for lunch, then take the center’s van to Safeway for your weekly shopping. Participants are then driven home and assisted with parcels as needed. There is a suggested donation of $1 for this service. Call the center to get yourself on our schedule.

Monday, May 20

The computer and technology users group will meet from 9:30 to 11 a.m. All are welcome to drop by. Contact the center for more information.

Lunch will be served by a group from LOMEA. The menu includes Caesar salad, hamburger casserole with side dish of green beans, freshly baked focaccia and for dessert, triple chocolate cookies.

Socrates Café meets in the Acorn room from 1 to 3 p.m. This is a discussion group where people from different backgrounds get together and exchange thoughtful ideas and experiences while embracing the Socratic Method.

Tuesday, May 21

The Happy Hikers group meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m. and Saturdays at 9:30 a.m. to explore the trails of Tryon Creek State Park, Foothills, Willamette Park and more. Carpool or caravan will leave from LOACC east parking lot to park. Saturday morning group meets at George Rogers Park lower level.

The Lake Oswego Respite Program begins at 11:30 a.m. in the Acorn room. The program costs $30 per participant each day, and is held both Tuesdays and Thursdays on an ongoing basis. Contact Berta Derman, human services supervisor, to register for the program.

Caregivers group meets today from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. in the Cedar room. The group is designed for family members and friends caring for older adults and friends caring for older adults with memory problems due to Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. Walk-ins welcome.

Wednesday, May 22

The arthritis group meets from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; guest speaker is attorney Johnathan Mishkin, P.C. He will be speaking on life decisions, health and financial planning. These monthly meetings feature a variety of programs to benefit those living with arthritis. No fee and walk-ins welcome.

Lunch will be served by a group from City Slickers. Menu includes broccoli slaw, cod with tomatoes and mushrooms, potato wedges, green and yellow squash and freshly baked dinner rolls. For dessert there will be chocolate and vanilla swirl pudding. Suggested donation for those 60 and over is $4; $5 for those under 60. Seating opens at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is served promptly at noon. Call to let us know you are coming.

The weekly supervised computer lab runs from 1 to 2:30 p.m. downstairs in the Alder room. Everyone is welcome.

From 1 to 3 p.m. experienced pinochle players meet in the Willow room. Call to let us know you are coming so that pinochle group can coordinate play.

Experienced American mah jongg players meet to play between 1 and 4 p.m. each Wednesday in the Birch room at no cost.

Thursday, May 23

Creative Hands meets in the Dogwood room from 9:30 a.m. to noon to work on handicraft projects benefiting various charities in the community. New participants always welcome.

Join the bike ride along Springwater Corridor toward Gresham from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Meet at Sellwood Park for this 26-mile trip. This is not for beginners and pre-registration is required. For more information, call the center. Cost is $5 members/$7 all others.
