The non-impact physical conditioning program called Nia has been in existence for nearly 30 years, but it’s only been available at the West Linn Adult Community Center for a few months. It combines martial arts and dance in a workout set to music of varied genres.

The instructor is Mary Milner, a longtime West Linn resident who’s been practicing and teaching Nia for more than a decade. Milner’s also a whole health coach and a massage therapist. She’s cheerful, energetic, an accomplished dancer and she goes non-stop for the entire 45-minute class.

Students are encouraged to follow Milner’s lead. The movements are not complicated, sometimes quite slow and very gentle. And if you get lost, it’s no problem. Just pick up the dance again when you can.

The gentleness of the dances is deceptive, however. You will definitely work up a sweat and will need some water during the class.

One of Milner’s students, Ron Sczesny, said of the class, “It allows you to let yourself go and feel alive. It’s like an awakening.”

Nia meets 11:15 a.m. to noon Tuesdays and Thursdays.
