Piano prodigy Adria Ye plays Portland performance Friday

by: SUBMITTED PHOTO: RUIMING WANG - Adria Ye is rapidly becoming a world-class musical performer. The former Lake Oswego elementary school student plans a Portland concert on Friday.

It was not that long ago that Adria Ye was hoping for a growth spurt so her feet could reach the pedals of her piano.

Now, at only age 16, Adria is an experienced concert pianist, and her friends in Lake Oswego can find out just how far she has come when she gives a recital on Friday night at 7 p.m. at the Portland Piano Company. Adria is thrilled about this opportunity.

“It’s hard to believe it has already been so long,” she said. “I met so many wonderful people and learned so much. Oregon has always felt like home to me, and I can’t wait to come back.”

Yes, Adria is showing you can come home again, and you can come back better than ever. She is still very young and small of stature, but she is already an artist and likely on the way to becoming a great artist. Her Oregon homecoming concert is very exciting for her friends and former classmates in Lake Oswego, and nobody is more excited about it than her former piano teacher Elizabeth Stern. To Stern, Adria is such a great talent that Stern uses a word to describe her that would make the modest and soft-spoken Adria cringe: Genius.

“What Adria brings to music is so compelling,” Stern said. “She can play highly difficult pieces, or she can make easy pieces sound so wonderful. You can’t copy a genius. Eventually, genius only learns from itself. At some point the genius has to be the guiding force.”

Adria has achieved so much since being so small she couldn’t reach her piano pedals. She has performed on National Public Radio, at the Aspen Music Festival, and she has taken first place in several high-level competitions. She is well on her way to being an international artist with performances in Shanghai and Nanchang in China.

She has already been invited to play again with the Nanchang Philharmonic Orchestra. Her career will only expand after she graduates from the Juilliard School of Music in New York City in 2015.

The Portland Piano Company is located at 711 SW 14th Ave., Portland. Admission to the concert is free.
