For hundreds of years, people have avoided Fridays when they plan to start a sea voyage, do needlework, write letters or get married. It’s probably not surprising that most modern brides — even senior ones — still wouldn’t plan their weddings for a Friday, much less a Friday the 13th.

To do so would just be asking for trouble.

And as for the number 13, its “unluckiness” probably comes from the Bible. Judas Iscariot was said to be the 13th person at the Last Supper.

By the 1700s, many believed that if 13 people sat at a table together, someone would die. In the 1700s, that was probably a good bet anyway.

Folkloric remedies for avoiding bad luck include burning any socks with holes in them and eating gristle while standing on your head.

None of the seniors at the WLACC plan to do either of these. They’ll just take their luck as it comes, good or bad.

On a hopefully unrelated note, the Annual Meeting of the WLACC membership will take place June 18, at 1 p.m.

If you are a member of the Friends of the WLACC, please come for lunch at noon and stay to cast your ballot for new officers.

Here are the upcoming week’s activities. Please call the WLACC at 503-557-4704 for specific times and possible fees.
