Add pizzazz to your family menu
Surveys show that most American home cooks make the same seven dishes over and over again.
West Linn Parks & Recreation is helping you add variety to your menu with cooking classes taught by West Linn resident Chef Surja Tjahaja. Tjahaja will teach a class on making Vietnamese salad rolls with barbecued chicken and shrimp, plus share secrets for making a traditional marinade using galangal (a food flavoring that's native to Java) and lemongrass.
The class is scheduled from 10 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Aug. 20. Cost is $40 per person, plus $8 material fee payable to Tjahaja. Come ready for a divine picnic.
Skyhawks Youth SportsSince 1993, Skyhawks Youth Sports Camps has partnered with the City to provide a wide range of camps in the community. Skyhawks offers fun camps that teach sportsmanship, teamwork individual and team skills. During the week of Aug. 7, the camps being offered are tennis (ages 7-14), beginning golf (ages 5-10), which will run from 9 a.m.-noon Monday through Friday; cost for either camp is $109. A multi-sport camp that includes soccer, basketball and flag football (ages 6-13) will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday. The cost is $149.
Safety Town A few spots are available in Safety Town, running 9-11 a.m. Aug. 21-25, for ages 4-6 (must be this age during camp session).
Participants learn how to handle many hazardous and potentially dangerous situations. Guest speakers include a trauma nurse from Legacy Emanuel Hospital, Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue, West Linn Police Department, First Student and more. Campers also learn how to wait for and ride the school bus safely; about poison awareness; stranger danger; and how and when to call 911. The program includes a T-shirt, daily snack and craft.
Camp ends with a complimentary bike rodeo and barbecue activity from 11 am-noon on Friday for the whole family. The cost is $65 per camper.
Rocket Lab3 ... 2 ... 1 ... Blast off! This camp is all about rockets, rockets and more rockets. Build and launch a rocket every day as you learn all about, you guessed it, rockets! Your child is in for an action-packed week focused entirely on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. Campers learn the importance of teamwork in launching rockets and will have the opportunity to try their hand at each role. The camps is for ages 8-12 and meets 1-4 p.m. Aug. 14-18. The registration fee is $168.
STEM FUNdamentals with LEGO
Ratchet up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and LEGOs. Engineer-designed projects combine concepts from physics, engineering and architecture to make creations like motorcycles, aircraft carriers, conveyor belts and rail racers. Campers explore their craziest ideas in a supportive environment. The class is for ages 7-11, and it meets 1-4 p.m. Aug. 14-18. The cost is $144.
