Our Lady of the Lake is preparing for its annual Summer's End Festival and ROLL (Ride with Our Lady of the Lake) to take place Sept. 10 at the church grounds, 650 A Ave. in Lake Oswego. All are welcome to this community celebration. Participants are encouraged to attend the 11 a.m. Mass, or stay after the festival for the Life Teen Mass at 6 p.m.
The festival starts at noon with a parade down A Avenue to Third Street and back.
"It's a short route," said Father John Kerns. "We may parade around again and again." There will be a motorcycle escort for the parade and a vintage 1923 Model T in the parade.
Two bike routes are planned this year. Bikers can choose to ride 16 miles or just six. Cost of the organized rides is $15 per rider and those who pre-register receive a T-shirt for the event.
The Funland festivities at the church grounds include kids' games plus inflatable bounce houses. Entertainment features the River City Dancers, Master Kim's world champion taekwondo demonstration, dancers from the Academy of Ballet and Dance Arts, Frisbee golf, a cupcake walk, a baking competition, a bagpiper and much more. Admission to Funland is $3, and it's free with the purchase of a meal.
The meals will be expertly prepared by the parish's Knights of Columbus. On the menu are pulled-pork sandwiches, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, watermelon and corn on the cob. There will also be potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans and lemonade. Adult meal tickets are $10; meal tickets for children ages 4-10 years of age are $7 and includes admission to Funland activities and bounce houses.
The Knights of Columbus encourage attendees to donate canned foods to the food barrel for St. Vincent de Paul. Those bringing at least two cans of food will receive either free ice cream or popcorn.
Event organizers also encourage attendees to participate in an adult and kids' baking competition. This is a free competition with no age requirements. Both inexperienced and seasoned home cooks are invited to participate. Categories include pies, cakes and cupcakes, cookies, dessert bars or brownie, sweet breads, rolls and muffins. There will be a disc jockey spinning requests and a photo booth and representatives from the Lake Oswego fire and police departments will be on hand to show off their vehicles and answer questions.
The event is free and open to all. For complete details, visit ollparish.com/summer-end-festival.html or call 503-636-7687.
