Kids to College setting up Christmas tree, greens sale
Back for its 10th season, Kids to College will open its annual Holiday Green Sale the day after Thanksgiving until Christmas Eve at Oswego Village Shopping Center. The Christmas tree lot will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Terra Mar Centers has again provided space for the nonprofit organization space next to Ace Hardware and across the street from Whole Foods 365, at 140 F St. in Lake Oswego. The green sale will include trees, fresh cut each week; table decorations, bows, hand-tied wreaths, swags and incense cedar garland, made fresh by local vendors.
Kids to College was founded in 2007 by former Lake Oswego student Haley Russell, as a means to raise money for herself and friends to attend afterschool activities and summer camps. Originally called Teens to Camp, the program was renamed Kids to College when the high school students graduated, and instantly captured the community's interest. The goal is simple: Empower today's students for tomorrow's future, providing a safe, fulfilling environment that encourages self-confidence and life skills, providing hands-on work related experience. In exchange for their volunteer hours the students receive a cash donation for their high school activities, college tuition, books and additional educational costs. Last year $7,000 was raised and helped students from area high schools, community colleges and universities. In addition, last year six students were offered part-time positions with local merchants who had visited the greens sale and were impressed with their work ethics and customer service.
