Join reporter Barb Randall for Week Two of Healthy Eating Active Living month

Editor's note: January is Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL) month in Lake Oswego, and the City's Parks & Recreation Department is urging residents of all ages to make healthier choices. We are in Week Two of Parks & Rec's HEAL program. How are you doing on your resolve to eat healthier and be more active? I've noticed many people taking walks outdoors in all kinds of weather, and I applaud your dedication.

Exercising outdoors is one of the benefits I enjoy from the Small Group Fitness Training class with Lake Oswego Community School. Read on to learn more about it.

HEAL Week No. 2

WHAT: Small Group Fitness Training

CLASS TIME: 6 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at Lake Oswego High School, 2501 Country Club Road

SPECIAL EQUIPMENT: A pair of small weights (five pounds is fine to start), yoga mat and water. The class begins with a warmup indoors and then moves outside; dress in layers for the weather.

SOME BACKGROUND: This class is a fitness boot camp — a group training program designed to build strength and fitness through a variety of intense exercises and resistance work.

You might remember reporter Sam Stites' Neighbors feature last fall on this class. I was so inspired by the article that I signed up the day it ran. I liked instructor Teresa Wymetalek's approach to fitness and the supportive attitude of the class members.

The class is hard, hard, hard, but Teresa makes it fun, fun, fun. She believes strength, stamina and spirit are the basis of a healthy life.

"Physical strength gives you the ability to go out and get stuff done," she writes on her webpage "Mental strength helps you face the ups and downs life throws at you. Stamina is all about endurance — whether it's finishing your first marathon or having energy to do the thing you want to do after you finish everything you have to do.

"Spirit is about how you choose to experience life," she adds.  "We all have challenges and failures and I love that every day is a fresh start to meet those challenges and learn from our mistakes.  Every day brings an opportunity to make choices that give you strength, fuel your stamina and feed your spirit. It's all about attitude and making the choice to seize the day."

MY IMPRESSION: I absolutely love this class. It is a challenge every day, and every session is different. The beauty of interval training is that each exercise is done for a short duration; we adopt the philosophy that we can do anything for a minute. Participants work at their own pace, but we all know we are there for one purpose: to get fit. Nobody is doing our pushups for us, so we get out there and do it for ourselves.

During my first week of boot camp, it seemed every muscle in my body was "singing" its objection to the increased movement; now starting my second eight-week session, I am physically stronger, have more physical and mental stamina and mental clarity. I truly look forward to each session and often am awake before the alarm rings at 5:20 a.m. to get up and go.

Yes, it is an early start time. But starting the day with such positive action with like-minded, supportive people is a boon to my attitude and productivity. And the hour flies by.

I also love the fact that we spend time outdoors in the elements, breathing fresh air and experiencing the chill of winter. We arrive in the dark and watch the day dawn. It's a great way to start the day.

"It's about having fun, getting fit and living well," Teresa says. "My passion is helping others enrich their lives and the lives of their families by making healthy choices.  We are all in it together.  Get out there and do it."
