Breast Friends is a new support group for women with breast cancer or other forms of cancer

A new support group for women working through breast cancer or other types of cancer will begin meeting Wednesday, Jan. 17, at Cascade Pizza Co. (1017 SW First Ave.) in Canby from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Breast Friends, co-founded by Sharon Henifin and Becky Olsen in 2000, is opening a chapter in Canby. The support group will meet the third Wednesday of the month moving forward.

"We want to provide emotional support for women going through breast cancer or other types of women's cancer," said Henifin. "We have support groups in five counties, in towns like Hillsboro, Tigard, Milwaukie and Salem."

Henifin said they were looking to start a support group in the area, as the drive to Salem or Tigard from this area tended to be a bit prohibitive.

Fortunately, a Hubbard woman who was traveling to a Salem group stepped forward to offer her leadership to a local group. And with that, a Canby Breast Friends support group was in the works.

"I thought it would be a great addition," said Henifin of the Canby group.

When a woman walks into the support group, Henifin said they can expect to "find a safe place to talk about things they probably don't want to talk about normally--fears about cancer, the treatment and side effects. It's a place to be heard and share ideas.

"It will also be bringing in some educational things to the women, too. They learn about nutrition, acupuncture or whatever topic they would be interested in," she added.

Breast Friends, works with 400 to 700 women each year and have been a conduit to emotional healing for thousands since 2000.

For women dealing with breast cancer or other types of women-related cancers, Henifin hopes that if they are thinking about attending the support group that they keep this in mind -- "The two things that people say about Breast Friends is 'I didn't know I needed you' and 'I wish I'd found you sooner,'" according to Henifin.
