Weston McEwen's Justin DeDios hit a two-run homer as the TigerScots scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning rallied past the Cougars of Molalla in Wednesday's opening round of the OSAA Class 2A/1A baseball playoffs.

Justin DeDios’ two-run home run highlighted a three-run sixth inning that carried the Weston-McEwen TigerScots to a 4-2 victory over the Country Christian Cougars in Wednesday’s opening round of the OSAA Class 2A/1A baseball playoffs in Athena.

Two Country Christian errors helped prolong the sixth inning and set the stage for DeDios, who drove a 2-1 pitch from Cougars’ starter Jordan Syphard to center that propelled the TigerScots (19-5) into the quarterfinals for the second time in three seasons.

Trailing 1-0, the Cougars (20-7) rallied in the top of the sixth when Andrew Axmaker led off with a single, moved to second on Hayden Cunningham’s sacrifice bunt, and came home on a Syphard single to tie the score.

After Syphard stole second, Mitchell Sandberg lined an RBI-double to left, giving the Cougars of Molalla a 2-1 lead.

The TigerScots answered in the home half of the sixth when they capitalized on two Country Christian errors — one in the infield with one out, the other in the outfield with two outs — and scored three unearned runs to regain the lead.

Country Christian brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh with one out, but the comeback fizzled when Axmaker grounded into a fielder's choice and then Weston-McEwen starter Justin Burke picked Axmaker off first base for the game’s final out.

Burke went the distance, scattering seven hits with one strikeout.

Sypard also scattered seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts as the Cougars got bounced from the playoffs after reaching the semifinals last season.
