Expect warmer, drier weather in May

Temperatures in Madras averaged colder than normal during the month of April, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service in Pendleton.

The average temperature was 43.4 degrees, which was 2.3 degrees below normal. High temperatures averaged 60.9 degrees, which was 0.3 degrees above normal. The highest was 78 degrees on April 27.

Low temperatures averaged 25.8 degrees, which was 4.9 degrees below normal. The lowest was 11 degrees, on the 30th.

There were 23 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees.

Precipitation totaled 0.21 inches during April, which was 0.71 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation — at least .01 inch — was received on four days with the heaviest, 0.11 inches reported on April 5.

Precipitation this year has reached 1.00 inches, which is 2.99 inches below normal. Since October, the water-year precipitation at Madras has been 5.01 inches, which is 2.46 inches below normal.

The highest wind gust was 36 mph, which occurred on April 7.

The outlook for May from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate Prediction Center calls for above normal temperatures and below normal precipitation.

Normal highs for Madras rise from 64.0 degrees at the start of May to 72.0 degrees at the end of May. Normal lows rise from 33.0 degrees to 40.0 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.01 inches.
