County to seek new jail levy

To take effect in July 2014

With a little less than a year left on the jail levy passed in 2011, Jefferson County officials will ask voters for a five-year levy in November. The new operations levy would take effect when the current levy expires on June 30, 2014.

After a work session July 10, the Jefferson County Commission and Sheriff Jim Adkins unanimously agreed that they would seek a levy of $1.24 per $1,000 assessed property value, to replace the 99 cents per $1,000 operations levy which the county passed on May 17, 2011, and went into effect July 1, 2011.

"The $1.24 per $1,000, along with the Crook County contract and other sources of income will allow me to operate the jail at the current staffing and maintain our ability to house 105 inmates," said Adkins.
