Heckathorn memorial service held

by: HOLLY M. GILL - The procession honoring the late JCEMS Chief Don Heckathorn passed from the fairgrounds through town and up to Jefferson County Middle School before the memorial service for Heckathorn on Aug. 22.Dozens of emergency responders, from all over Central Oregon, as well as from Metro West Ambulance and Multnomah County, drove in a procession from the Jefferson County Fairgrounds to the middle school on Aug. 22, to pay last respects to Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services Chief Don Heckathorn.

Heckathorn died Aug. 14, from injuries sustained in a motorcycle-car crash Aug. 8. When the incident occurred, Heckathorn was northbound on U.S. Highway 97 on a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle. An eastbound 1996 Cadillac, driven by Gerald Scott Green, 36, of Prineville, failed to stop at the stop sign on Dover Lane, and collided with his motorcycle.

Heckathorn, who was wearing a helmet, sustained life-threatening injuries, and was transported by Lifeflight to St. Charles Bend, where he remained until his death. His injuries included a traumatic head injury and multiple broken bones. Green was not injured.

The procession included motorcyclists from the Patriot Guard Riders, and was accompanied by a LifeFlight helicopter.

After the service, at 3:50 p.m., a dispatcher toned out the last call for Heckathorn, adding, “Don, may you rest in peace. You’re gone, but not forgotten.”
