Weather warm, wet in September

October outlook normal


Temperatures at Madras averaged slightly warmer than normal during the month of September, according to preliminary data received by the National Weather Service in Pendleton.

The average temperature was 58.9 degrees, which was 1.3 degrees above normal. However, high temperatures averaged 75.1 degrees, which was 1.3 degrees below normal. The highest was 92 degrees on the Sept. 2.

Low temperatures averaged 42.7 degrees, which was 3.9 degrees above normal. The lowest was 30 degrees, on the 26th.

There were two days with the low temperature below 32 degrees. On two days, the temperature exceeded 90 degrees.

Precipitation totaled 1.16 inches during September, which was 0.75 inches above normal. Measurable precipitation — at least 0.01 inch — was received on 12 days with the heaviest, 0.28 inches reported on the 29th.

The highest wind gust was 46 mph which occurred on the 29th.

The outlook for October from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center calls for near normal temperatures and near to above normal precipitation.

Normal highs for Madras fall from 71 degrees at the start of October to 56 degrees at the end of October. Normal lows fall from 34 degrees to 29 degrees.

The 30-year normal precipitation is 0.85 inches.
