Madras M painted purple

Observing Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Volunteers repainted the white 'M' on the hill west of Madras with lavender paint Oct. 10, in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, which is symbolized by the color purple. The rocks will be painted white again at the end of the month. The giant “M” on the hill overlooking Madras took on a lavender hue Oct. 11, as volunteers painted it in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Purple is the color symbolizing Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and in past years, purple lights and ribbons have been put on downtown trees.

But this year, members of Saving Grace and the Girls Advisory Board decided to go big and take on the task of painting the rock boulders making up the M.

Over a dozen teenage girls, and adult volunteers hauled more than 20 gallons of purple paint, donated by Madras Paint and Glass, Phil’s Ace Hardware, and BestCare Treatment Services, up the steep hill

The crew started at 8 a.m., and worked quickly, with the M being transformed by 12 p.m. When the awareness month is over at the end of October, they will paint the M back to its original white color. A lot of work, but an important message.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month evolved from the Day of Unity, held in October 1981.

The intent was to connect advocates across the nation who were working to end violence against women and their children. The day soon became an entire week devoted to a wide range of activities with the common themes of: mourning those who have died because of domestic violence, celebrating those who have survived, and connecting those who work to end violence.

In 1987, the first Domestic Violence Awareness Month was observed, and in 1989, the U.S. Congress passed a law designating October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Saving Grace provides confidential and free services to victims of family violence, and promotes the value of life without violence. For more information, contact the office at 541-475-1880.
