Culver mayor submits resignation

Nancy Diaz to step in Jan. 1

by: SUSAN MATHENY - Nancy DiazCulver Mayor Shawna Clanton has submitted her resignation, effective Jan. 1.

According to Donna McCormack, city recorder, the city charter directs that the council president, Nancy Diaz, becomes mayor through the end of the current term, which ends Dec. 31, 2014.

Clanton, who was elected to her first two-year term as mayor in 2008, submitted her letter of resignation on Nov. 18. The council declared a vacancy Dec. 16.

"I just need more family time," said Clanton, who intends to continue to volunteer for the city. "My husband and I want to do some fun things."

Although she has enjoyed serving as mayor and is proud of the city's many accomplishments during that period, Clanton is eager to spend more time with her grandchildren and adult children. "I'm not getting any younger," she said.

"Nancy Diaz is going to step up as mayor; she'll do a great job," said Clanton.

Diaz, the Jefferson County coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon, has served on the board for five years, and been council president for four years.

"I feel honored to be able to serve the community as mayor," she said. "I'm going to be filling some pretty amazing shoes. I just hope I can be as good at it as she has been."
