Frozen pipes disable kitchen

Deer Ridge Correctional Institution Food Services provided meals for the Warm Springs Early Childhood Education Center last week, due to frozen pipes disabling the kitchen in their facility.

Officials at the prison received a phone call on Wednesday, Dec. 11, at 2 p.m., requesting 240 meals for both breakfast and lunch on Thursday, Dec. 12, to feed the children and staff at the ECE.

DRCI staff arrived early on Thursday, Dec. 12 to ensure the hot breakfast was prepared promptly for the 7:30 a.m. pickup time.

To prevent the ECE from making two trips to Madras, the kitchen staff and adults in custody also prepared the lunches so they could go on the morning trip. DRCI staff and adults in custody were on standby to prepare meals for the ECE on Friday if they could not get their kitchen operational, but ECE's kitchen was functioning by Friday.

Deer Ridge Correctional Institution is a minimum-security prison located east of Madras that houses approximately 770 inmates who are within four years of release. The prison provides education, alcohol and drug treatment and work opportunities for adults in custody.
