Outlook for January near normal

It probably comes as no surprise that December temperatures in Madras were significantly colder than normal.

According to preliminary data received from the National Weather Service in Pendleton, the average temperature was 26.8 degrees, which was 4.0 degrees below normal. High temperatures averaged 40.2 degrees, which was 0.4 degrees above normal. The highest was 59 degrees on Dec. 1.

Low temperatures averaged 13.3 degrees, which was 8.5 degrees below normal. The lowest was -24 degrees, on Dec. 9.

There were 29 days with the low temperature below 32 degrees and five days below zero. There were eight days when the high temperature stayed below 32 degrees.

Precipitation totaled 0.39 inches during December, which was 0.99 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation — at least .01 inch — was received on four days, with the heaviest, 0.30 inches, reported on Dec. 2.

The month came in like a lion, with strong winds. The highest wind gust was 53 mph, which occurred on Dec. 1, also the warmest day of the month.

The outlook for January from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center calls for near normal temperatures and near normal precipitation. Normal highs for Madras during January are 41.8 degrees and normal lows are 23.4 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 1.30 inches.
