Mission Possible: Some 277 are Movin' Mountains

A total of 271 people have signed up to commit the next four months to getting healthier and shedding some pounds during the 2014 Movin' Mountains Mission Possible event.

There were some significant changes with Movin' Mountains this year — including a change in the presenting sponsorship that threatened the existence of the event. But even with some confusion, this year's weigh-ins in Madras and Warm Spring Jan. 23-25 drew the third-highest in total entries in the event's five-year span.

A total of $7,770 will be up for grabs through Movin' Mountains this year. Organizers have expanded the number of people who can win money by having weight divisions in the individual categories, three in the men's competition and five in the women's. The divisions are named, appropriately, after mountains.

Competition is based on the percentage of weight and inches lost on hips and waist lost during the four-month program.

"We're very pleased with the turnout," said Carolyn Harvey, one of the lead organizers of the event.

The Madras hospital, along with the Jefferson County Health Department, have jointly been primary sponsors of the first four years of the event. But, when St. Charles Madras had a staffing change in December that included eliminating the position of one of the lead event organizers, Beth Ann Beamer, it appeared for a time that Movin' Mountains would not happen in 2014. However, the Jefferson County Health Department quickly expanded it sponsoring level and commitment, ensuring that the popular event would continue.

St. Charles later rejoined the program as a sponsor, along with a handful of other organizations.
