Businesses should be prepared to evacuate

The recent snow fall in Jefferson County and within the city of Madras is beginning to melt rapidly due to rain and warmer temperatures, and on Tuesday, Feb. 11, the National Weather Service issued a flood advisory for north Central Oregon due to rain falling on the snowpack.

The advisory will be in effect through the afternoon of Wednesday, Feb. 12, according to Nick Snead, director of community development for Madras.

The city of Madras along with other agencies are preparing for flood conditions in the city. In particular, areas near Willow Creek are most likely to flood if flooding occurs.

In doing so, city administrators would like to notify residents and businesses about the possibility for flood conditions. Residents and business should be prepared to evacuate on short notice, Snead said.

Additionally, residents should be prepared to be away from their residence for an extended time. Business owners need to be prepared to close their business and protect their belongings for an extended amount of time.

If flood becomes and immediate threat, the city will have sandbags available to the public at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds and at Les Schwab Tire Center in Madras. If residents need emergency assistance, they should call 911.
